Obstructive sleep apnea affects a substantial number of the adult population. People who have OSA cannot breathe while sleeping due to a physical blockage in their upper airway, it can cause snoring, gasping, choking and they can stop breathing. Patients complain of daytime sleepiness, brain fog and headaches. Living with OSA has been associated with serious health issues such as strokes, heart disease, high blood pressure and heart attacks.
The Inspire® Sleep Apnea Implant is an upper airway stimulator for people who have Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), the small device monitors your breathing while you sleep and delivers mild stimulation to open your airway. This device is an alternative to CPAP. Inspire® Sleep Apnea Treatment opens your airway by moving your tongue forward inside your mouth so that it does not block your breathing passages. The device consists of three major components, a monitor that measures your breathing, a nerve stimulator that adjusts your tongue placement and a remote. Before you go to sleep you turn on the Inspire® device, once activated the device implanted in your upper chest monitors your breathing. The implant communicates with the nerve stimulator each time you take a breath; the device sends a gentle pulse to the nerve that controls your tongue’s motor function. This stimulation is not uncomfortable or painful. There are a few requirements patients must meet before being eligible for Inspire®. You must be over 18 years old, you must have obstructive sleep apnea with an AHI (apnea-hypopnea index, a tool that measures the number of breathing pauses during sleep) score between 15 and 65, you must have failed CPAP and your BMI must be under 32.
If you are currently using CPAP and find the mask uncomfortable, hard to tolerate and unable to get a good restful night the Inspire ® Sleep Apnea Treatment may be for you. NO MASK, NO HOSE, JUST SLEEP ™.
